ACT Kicks off 16 Days of Activism in Egypt with "Knock the Doors" Campaign

Cairo, Egypt (November 26, 2013) - Appropriate Communication Techniques for Development (ACT), with support from Karama, launched their campaign“Knock the Doors” at event held on Monday night. The event kicks-off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, which is an international campaign uniting individuals and groups around the world in a call to eliminate all forms of violence against women.

The launch event was held in Cairo, Egypt on the International Day Against Violence Against Women and attended by activists, policymakers and representatives of the media and youth movements. The "Knock the Doors (Stop violence against women: it is a crime)" campaign will include the production and distribution of approximately 30,000 posters, as well as fliers and stickers, and 250 t-shirts. A door-to-door initiative to build awareness and support within the community, which is anticipated to reach 1,000 doors in 10 governorates of Egypt, will also be completed as part of the campaign.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence originated from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. Since then, women’s rights activists all over the world have organized community-based events, convenings and workshops to raise awareness on the causes and consequences of all forms of violence against women and to elevate strategies to combat it. The 16 Days of Activism runs from November 25th, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, to December 10th, which is International Human Rights Day.
