Experience and lessons from the WPS agenda

To mark women, peace and security week 2022, Karama is proud to announce its latest publication, documenting the practical experience of women implementing the agenda on the ground.

Published as part of our ongoing commitment to the Women, Peace and Security & Humanitarian Action Compact, Experiences and Lessons documents the the lived realities of women whose work and lives have been affected by conflict and occupation.

In addition to documenting the experience of women from six countries in Africa and the Arab region, the publication includes contributions from further afield, adding global perspective. Its keynote comes from Radhika Coomaraswamy, senior diplomat and academic who served as lead author of the Global Study on the Implementation of Resolution 1325 published in 2015.

The document makes clear that the reality of women, peace and security has not matched the rhetoric of members states since the passage of UNSCR 1325 over 20 years ago.

However, what the contributions also demonstrate is the absolute determination of activists - including women and men - from across the world to make the women, peace and security a true people’s agenda: advocating for it in their communities, making it relevant to the locality, putting words into action.

Experiences and Lessons aims to be the first of a series of volumes to document the reality of women, peace and security, ensuring that the wealth of our partners’ experience is recorded and made available widely.
