Killings at #Jan17March: We stand with Sudan
Karama condemns the murder of seven protestors by Sudanese security forces in Al Diyum.
The killings today are only the latest instance of the military regime’s brutal attempt to suppress the movement for democracy and justice in Sudan since their coup last year.
It has become all too common to see appalling images of Sudanese left dead, dying, and injured by security forces shared over WhatsApp and social media. Despite their frequency, the horror of these images never diminishes. Each loss is its own individual tragedy. Every crime demands accountability and justice.
Across Sudan, thousands upon thousands of protesters continue to take to the streets to make their voices heard. The regime’s only response has been violence. They are trying to suffocate the movement for freedom with tear gas, and with their hands around the throats of the Sudanese people.
With every bullet, shell, and canister fired, every life ended, the military underlines its lack of legitimacy to lead Sudan.
For decades, Sudanese suffered under dictatorship. They did not rise up in order to be ruled by a different murderer.
We call for concerted action from the international community to ensure civilian rule in Sudan, and that the perpetrators of today’s crimes and all other atrocities committed by the security forces face justice.
We stand with the people of Sudan.
