A delegation of activists from Sudanese civil society yesterday met with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States in Cairo to discuss the urgent need to end the ongoing conflict in Sudan, and to address its impact on women.

The delegation comprised leaders of women’s rights organizations and academics, including those who have fled the fighting in Sudan. In their meeting with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who leads the League of Arab States, the group presented a statement underlining the need to provide support to those affected by the conflict, responding to the particular needs of women, girls, older people, people with disabilities and chronic diseases.

Participants also discussed the physical and psychological impact of the conflict, calling on the Secretary-General put pressure on the conflict parties to end hostilities, allow humanitarian aid, and ensure the support of those displaced by the conflict, both in Sudan and internationally.

The League of Arab States includes Sudan among its members, and the regional body has been involved in negotiations between the warring military and paramilitary factions in Sudan.
